If you just booted up Rainbow Six: Siege and found yourself downloading an impressive 4.5 gb, there's a reason for that. The game begins year three, season two today with the Operation Para Bellum update, leaving behind the biohazard stylings of last season in favor of a comparatively luxe Italianate aesthetic palette. For a rundown of the complete patch notes, check out Ubisoft. Here's what we're working with:
The biggest additions are the new operators, which Season Pass holders can use today but don't go live for everyone else until June 14. They're both members of the Italian Gruppo Intervento Speciale, or G.I.S.
Alibi: Alibi is a 3-speed defender wielding an Mx4 Storm submachine gun or an ACS12. Her special ability deploys holograms made to look like herself in order to fool the attacker, even going so far as to trigger a false "defender is outside" notice. The holograms don't move, but they are convincing. Watch them below:
Maestro: Maestro is a heavy 1-speed defender with an Alda 5.56 light machine gun or ACS12. His special ability is the evil eye, a fierce-sounding "evil-eye," a remote-controlled bulletproof camera and turret that can fire laser beams at the opponent--it's vulnerable while it fires those beams, however.
We're also getting a new map: a luxurious Tuscan Villa that's home to an Italian crime family and what I hope is a more than decent wine cellar. Ubisoft's description alludes to secret hatches and passageways that create only "the illusion of cover," and it will be interesting to see how that concept plays out. If nothing else, it is terribly pretty.
After that we've got the usual array of new cosmetics, as well as a sweeping buff to the Clubhouse map that the designers hope will help with balance and playability going forward while still "feeling like Clubhouse." Tower is also being removed from the ranked playlist for being too defender heavy.
From the gameplay perspective, there are a ton of tweaks, buffs and nerfs, which you can read about in the full patch notes. Most interesting, however, is the introduction of the pick and ban system, which lets you pick an operator to ban from the enemy's roster--the only trick is that it's also banned from yours.
